Channel winter white in your holiday dress

Jewel tones are popular during the holiday season, but so is winter white. This hue embodies the look of pristine snow as is glistens when you add embellishments. It's simple to incorporate those elements into your holiday party dresses. Here are a few tips to help you shop this season:

White dresses are the epitome of timeless style. But if you want an edgy look, opt for a cocktail length. These cocktail dresses allow you to show off your youthful vibe while looking stylish to boot.

With white as the base you can bring in a range of other hues. However, if you want to stay in the winter wonderland theme, opt for metallics as accents. Gold and silver complement the style perfectly. They also add a bit of sparkle to your look.

The holiday season is not the time to skimp on embellishments. Be sure your dress has crystals or beadwork that shines in the light. Additionally, lace is a fabric that looks great in winter white. Your dress may look similar to wedding gowns, and you will turn heads just like a bride does.

Choosing a Pageant System

There are hundreds of pageants available. They range from local festival pageants to state, regional, national and international competitions. There are pageants that require community service and talent in order to compete, and those that strictly judge on beauty, modeling skills and wardrobe. There are youth pageants that are "natural" and those that are " glitz."  So how in the world do you choose?

There are many questions you should ask yourself:
  • What is my ultimate goal in competing and what matters the most to me?
  • Are you looking for public recognition, cash prizes, tall crowns, scholarship money, or all of the above?
  • Can you afford the entry fees and wardrobe expenses if you do not have sponsors to help cover some of your costs?
  • How much time do you have to invest in getting ready to compete?
Answering these questions will help you to determine the right pageant system for you.

What to look for in a system:
  • Reputation Reputation Reputation! There will always be sore losers who may tell you that a pageant was "fixed" or not fair, but that should not be the basis for judging the credibility of the pageant's system.
  • Credentials of the directors - Are they the type of people who run well-organized pageants? If it is a new pageant, do not be afraid to call the directors and get to know more about them before you decide to invest your resources of time and money in their competition.
  • Support - Does the pageant have a long history of working to support their contestants, and later, their winners?
Also consider what level is your goal in pageantry. It may be winning your local fair pageant and representing your area at the state pageant level. Great! Or perhaps you want to win your local preliminary pageant so you can compete at the state level, and then with success compete at the national level. Whether you decide that your goal is to be your Miss Home Town or keep on competing until you reach the stage of Miss Universe, there is a pageant for you!

How to wear velvet this holiday season

It's always a challenge for ladies to stay warm while dressing up during the holiday season. The good news is that there is a fabric that seems to have been made for this exact dilemma. Velvet is ultra soft and shimmers in the light. It's often made from heavyweight material so it will keep you warm, even if you're wearing a dress. So no matter if you are looking for a garment for a Christmas celebration or a New Year's Eve bash, you'll look extra stylish in velvet.

Even though school dance season is far away, you can still look chic in a prom dress. Opt for a cocktail-length style to wear to any of your seasonal celebrations. Some are extra flirty and combine both lace and velvet.

Or you can choose something youthful with a velvet bodice and an A-line tulle skirt.

For another fun option, select from one of the popular styles of formal dresses. For instance, you can really turn heads in a floor-length gown. When this dress is made out of velvet it commands a certain level of attention. While black is a classic look, opt for blue or red to channel your youthful spirit.

What you gain in Pageantry!

Okay, you have decided to enter a pageant, good for you! Today we are going to begin pageant preparation. The first step towards success involves no entry fees, shopping trips or personal trainers. This step can be done anywhere and at anytime. It only involves you and your Sense of Self!

Now what in the world does that mean? First of all take a good long look at yourself and ask this question: What do I have to do to become pageant ready? What things do I need to work on to be the most competitive on stage and still be the best and truest representation of myself? You are not here to be the clone of another contestant or so programmed, that you seem fake. And girls, even though your mother thinks that you are perfect.... there is always room for improvement! Time to get honest here.

Second step is accepting the FACT that there is only going to be one winner and it may not be you! If you go into competition with the attitude that you are going to improve yourself in every area possible.... guess what? You will not lose anything if the crown is not placed on your head at the end of the pageant.

Next, my 5 reasons to guarantee you will not lose: As a former director of a local Miss America preliminary, I would always have a little talk with all my contestants right before rehearsal. This is how it goes...
  1. If you have prepared for the interview by keeping up on current events, understanding the world around you, and how you can take on positive changes to impact others with your community service....how have your lost anything, if you don't win this pageant? Oh and don't forget, improving your grade point average because some pageants do consider your academic success in scoring.
  2. If you have invested more time and energy to be the healthiest, most physically fit you can be in order to do well in swimsuit competition...how have your lost anything, other than poor eating habits and lack of working out?
  3. If you have perfected your talent in order to perform well on stage in front of a large audience... how have you lost, when your talent improved?
  4. If you can model your gown on stage with an attitude of poise and confidence...how have you lost, when you now can " own the stage" with grace!
  5. If you are able to articulate your thoughts in a concise answer during the on stage question competition, then you have improved your public speaking skills....how have you lost?
My belief in the value of these 5 reasons is why I can assure any contestant, who has this winning attitude, is involved in one of the best self improvement programs available: Pageantry!

Next time: There are so many pageants! How do I chose which one to do??

Key colors on the rise for winter 2013

There's nothing like the beauty of winter with falling snow and mystical landscapes. However, this season can bring about a slew of challenges when it comes to selecting formal dresses. As you already know, you can't recycle your wardrobe from last season - the colors of your existing cheap formal dresses may not fit the bill. To ensure you look stylish, here are some of the hottest colors expected to pop up throughout winter 2013.

This hue is going to be popular for both men and women in the coming months, according to Color Solutions International. Don't hesitate to slip on a chic brown dress this winter to fall in line with the season's most stylish trend.

Emerald was named the 2013 color of the year by Pantone, the color institute. That being said, it's no wonder it's expected to be dominate this coming winter.

This color is similar to violet, and the cool hue falls in line perfectly with the season. If you're interested in a color that makes you elegant as well as chic, don't overlook acai. It works wonders when it's used in everything from dresses to scarves.

So you want to be in Pageants?

The world of pageantry can be rewarding, fun, and glamorous. It can also be the opposite, and yes it does depend on what YOU put into it!

When parents bring me new pageant students I always ask the same question: Do you want your daughter to win, or do you need her to win? Sounds silly doesn't it? However, in reality, the way you mentally go into competition will not only help to determine your success, but also your longevity in the pageant world.
Turn on your TV and watch Miss America or Miss USA. I can assure you that the contestants you see on the national stages are the ones who have dedicated a great deal of time, energy, and talent, to get where they are standing. There is also a big financial commitment as well.
Think of pageantry as a sport. It takes training and practice to be the most competitive. It's also going to take the right equipment. Does every athlete win every game? Of course not! Does that make the athlete a defeated loser who should give up their sport? No, not if each time the competitor learns from their mistakes, and makes the necessary adjustments for future success. Now apply this to pageantry, because it is the exact same!
Are you ready to compete?
Next time...What you will gain if you compete in pageants and it is a lot more than a crown!

Tips for narrowing down bridal gowns

You may have shopped for plenty of formal dresses in the past, but nothing compares to the hunt for bridal gowns. There are numerous options to choose from, meaning it might take you some time before your narrow down the winner. Not sure how to go about the process? Here are some tips for finding the perfect dress for your big day.

1. Start early
It might seem crazy to start looking for a dress just a week after you said, "Yes," but doing so can help you eliminate stress and weed out the no-gos early, according to The Knot. Wedding dresses can take several months to get after ordering, so it's always a good idea to start searching for that perfect dress as soon as possible.

2. Come up with a dress code
If you don't want your wedding to be traditional or formal, you'll need to keep your theme in mind as you shop. This can help you ensure that your gown is within the boundaries of your big day, whether you want a Southern style wedding or a fairy tale event.

3. Be open-minded
We recommend being open-minded while shopping for a wedding gown, and for good reason. You might not like the idea of a strapless dress on other people, but it could look absolutely stunning on you!

4. Make an appointment
Making an appointment will insure that you have your own bridal consultant and her undivided attention to every detail you deserve. Proper etiquette for trying on wedding dresses includes things like wearing underwear and allowing consultants to assist you in trying on the gowns.

Give your bridesmaids some sparkle this season

Once you filter through a series of wedding gowns and find the perfect one for your big day, it's time to locate the ideal bridesmaid gowns to ensure your girls look just as fabulous. That being said, it might be worth looking into trends to get everything just right.

The Huffington Post recently reported that sequins are in, specifically when it comes to bridesmaid gowns. Think sparkly and glamorous - sequins and beads can help light bounce off of any ensemble and give any woman a glowing look. As you narrow down your options, try to stay within the realm of gold and silver. This can help you make sure that the dresses have a regal appearance rather than a tacky one.

Another trend that might be worth taking into consideration is the simple, elegant look and the illusion neckline. Since spring, this style has been growing in popularity, according to Wedding Wire. Just remember, you don't all have to be matching in neutral colors - solid dresses give you more room to play with hues and add some pop.

By taking these key tips into account, you can be sure that your bridesmaids are just as happy as you on your wedding day.
