As the mother of the bride, you want to look your best without taking the
spotlight from your daughter on her wedding day. Unfortunately, mother of the bride dresses are historically matronly and dated. Don’t give up. You
can be classy and appropriate without aging yourself.
Shop at your favorite stores. If possible, take your daughter along for the
trip. She can help you find a dress that fits with the rest of the wedding, and
her younger opinion can help you avoid the typical mother of the bride look. While you’re out shopping for the perfect dress, don’t think of yourself as
the mother of the bride. Instead, treat it like any other shopping trip with the
goal of finding formal dresses.
Remember, modesty doesn’t mean matronly. You can cover up and show off at the
same time. Before you start trying on dresses, think about highlighting your
favorite features. Try a long gown with a lower neckline, or even dare to go strapless. If your
legs are your best asset, don’t be afraid to go shorter. Shorter doesn’t have to
mean less formal.
