Top 10 Tips for Shopping for a Prom Dress Online

It's time for Prom 2012

Are you anxious to find the perfect dress of your dreams?  You probably don’t want a department store dress that anyone at school can buy. You want it to be unique, special, something no one else will have at prom. Your best chance of accomplishing that is ordering a dress online. But don’t worry – Just follow these Top 10 Tips and you’ll not only have the most amazing and ideal dress for you, you’ll have a dress that is different from all your friends' dresses and all eyes will be on YOU at your prom!

1. Shop Early: The most important thing you can do to get your 1st choice, dream dress, is to start looking for it early. Browse magazines such as Teen Prom and Seventeen to get an idea of the style of dresses for the season. Then go online to check out prices and where you can purchase them. Dresses can sell out at any time during prom season, so allowing yourself enough time to have one made, it if does sell out, will be less stressful and make certain you get the dress you want. Why Shop Early?

2. Authorized Dealer: Ensure the prom dress website is an authorized dealer for the brands they carry. You should be able to see the store/website on the designer’s store locator on their website. There are many sites that sell designer knock-offs, be sure you are dealing with a store that sells original dresses from the designers. How to Avoid Knock-off (counterfeit) Websites

3. Frequently Asked Questions: A legitimate website should have their business policies posted online or a set of FAQs detailing them. Be sure to read through them so you will know exactly what to expect when you place your order. TJ Formal FAQs

4. Return Policy: Check out the site’s return policy. Specialty dress shops usually don’t allow returns for reasons other than a defective dress. Return Policy

5. Shipping Details: Check out the site’s shipping policy – is shipping free? Are packages insured? Do they use a reputable shipping company? Do they ship overseas and what are the costs? Shipping details

6. Correct sizing: Measure yourself according to the instructions on the site. Formal dresses normally run small, so don’t just order the size you wear in regular clothes. Also, each designer has their own size chart so be sure to check each chart for each dress. Measuring Instructions or video showing How to Measure.

7. Know your body type: Not every dress looks good on every kind of body. Determining what looks best on you will not only narrow down the choices of dresses, but also make you the happiest because it will fit you and accent your body well. Body Style Guide

8. Determine your colors and style: Just as with body types, not every color and style looks good on everyone. What color looks best on you depends on your hair color, eye color, and skin color. Do you ever have friends say you look especially pretty? It’s probably partly due to the color you are wearing. Prom Style Quiz

9. Check availability: Before placing your order, check to see if the dress is in stock. Dresses can sell out at any time and it’s much better to know if your dress is going to get to you on time before you place your order. Check Availability

10. You got the dress!: Most formal dresses require some alterations to fit you perfectly. After you receive your dress, you can have it tailored by a professional seamstress local to you. Then go register it on the National Prom Dress Registry so that no one else going to your prom will buy it. Tell your friends to register their dresses too! National Prom Dress Registry

Now go enjoy your prom!!

Be a Rocker Girl for prom!

Are you wanting a rocker look for prom? Go for a short cocktail dress or prom dress that has some sparkle. Sherri Hill, Tony Bowls, Jovani, Riva Designs, and more have great new styles this year giving you a big selection of rocker girl dresses.

A bright color is practically guaranteed to get you noticed, so make sure you choose one in a flattering hue for your skin tone. If you want to show off your legs, pick a dress with more coverage on top. Likewise, when showing off your chest with a plunging neckline, choose a dress with a lower hemline to balance it out and keep it classy.

It's a good idea to choose a fabric that you can move in, as you might spend all night on the dance floor. Since you might get a little heated in the process, choosing an updo can be a good choice to avoid getting too sweaty. Once you've gotten ready, remember to have fun!

Are you ready for Mardi Gras?

While many ladies around the country are shaking off the dust from winter season, the next big holiday on the docket will be Mardi Gras. Whether you're heading to a party or a night on the town, make sure you have a few clubbing dresses to choose from to amp up your look.

Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday," is your chance to cut loose before the Easter season begins, and the holiday is known for its liberal use of color in decorations and attire. Take this to heart by searching for cocktail dresses in bright and bold colors, especially the traditional colors of purple, green, and gold, to get everyone thinking that spring is around the corner.

Lastly, don't forget to pile on your accessories! Instead of a statement necklace, go with a series of smaller pieces to add bright hues and contrast to your ensemble.

One-Shoulder dresses are an intriguing choice for your next formal event

While finding the perfect pairing and color choices may dominate the world of fashion, there's something wholly refreshing about an one-shoulder formal dress that can turn convention on its head. At the recent premiere of the new film, One for the Money, actress Katherine Heigl showcases a dazzling red formal gown that illuminated a few trendy style choices for 2012.

The form-fitting one-shoulder dress featured an elegant strap that crossed over the front of Heigl's choice of evening dresses. What set this apart from other celebrity ensembles this year is the way that the strap seemed to be the focal point of the dress. It bent and weaved down from the top to the bottom of her dress to give it a stunning bit of texture.

To top off the look of her dynamic red dress, Heigl wore a darker shade of bold red lip color that she paired with matching nail polish. As a glittering final touch, the actress wore a pair of diamond teardrop earrings that she paired with crystal peep-toe heels.

Red is a fabulous choice to look for when shopping for special occasion dresses. It can help your favorite cosmetics pop and make you the center of attention at your next formal event.

Prom Trends 2012 - Babydoll Prom Dresses

One of the most popular trends of the last few years was ramped up this year with most lines carrying babydoll prom dresses - Sherri Hill, Terani, Blush, Jovani, Tony Bowls and more. The babydoll style is short with a full skirt - sometimes made from tulle. These dresses can be strapless or not, one-shouldered, or haltered. Some are gathered at the waist and adorned with embellishments and some are drop-waisted. Pastels are very popular, but babydoll prom dresses can be found in brights and darks too. Girls love this style - it makes you feel flirty, sexy, and innocent all at the same time.

Should you match your makeup with your formal dress?

If you have a formal occasion on the horizon and you've already picked out the perfect formal dress, you may be wondering what sort of makeup style to wear. Oftentimes, ladies will opt to use eyeshadow and other cosmetics to pair with their outfits, but you should be very careful about going over the top with a specific hue.

Makeup can be extremely tricky, especially when you're dealing with multiple hues in the same formal gown. A good rule of thumb is to let your makeup stay as a complementary or contrasting color to the rest of your outfit. You should only go with bold colors if you're wearing a neutral ensemble that needs a pop of color.

On the other hand, if you're sporting a cocktail dress that combines a few neutral hues and a bit of color, use this to your advantage. Highlight the specific shade in your eye makeup, nail polish and footwear choices - this will help to create a uniform look without overburdening your outfit with a particular color.

Prom Trends 2012 - Ruffled and Tiered Prom Dresses

Ruffled prom dresses have always been popular. It's the style that guarantees you will look like a princess! But this year, the ruffled and tiered prom dresses have been taken to a brand new level. You can now find this trend in high-low hemlines, with a slimmer silhouette, with thigh-high slits, vertical rows, and more. Some of the ruffles and tiers are fluffy, some are flatter, and some are even wired. Designers such as Sherri Hill, Blush, Dana Mathers, and Mori Lee have included stunning styles with this prom trend in their collections.
