Three dress trends to try at your holiday party

While some young women are already on the hunt for the perfect prom dress, others are simply trying to make it through the holiday season. With December comes a flood of holiday parties and every woman wants to be outfitted appropriately. Unfortunately, this means going through several formal dresses to find the perfect one, but minding these three hot trends can make shopping a bit easier this winter.

1. Deep sea tones.
InStyle magazine reports that sea tones are all the rage this season and they aren't going away anytime soon. Look for deep ocean blue and seafoam or jade green ensembles to fall in line with the trend.

2. Bold Accessories.
Big bangles, long earrings, and elaborate necklaces will make any dress a stand-out! Don't forget some amazing shoes and a match handbag!

3. Gold everywhere.
Metallics are still in high demand this winter and nothing brightens a holiday party like a glistening dress. Look for a piece in gold or silver to create an eye-catching, stylish look.

Long sleeves take fall outfits to the next level

Fall is a popular season for a number of events, whether it's a wedding, cocktail party, holiday work party or school dance. But some ladies have trouble deciding what to wear - after all, wouldn't it be chilly in sleeveless formal gowns and short wedding dresses? Fortunately, Jessica Biel showed up at a recent fall event with the perfect solution.

What was it? Long sleeves! Dresses with long sleeves are unexpected yet perfect for an autumn night or day when the breeze is truly making those leaves fall. Jessica arrived on the red carpet at Variety's Power of Women event in a ruffled dress with long sleeves and a black, green and blue printed design.

The deep V-neck and knee-length hem still allowed for plenty of skin to be flaunted, and the dress looked a lot cozier than what her fellow attendees were wearing. She accessorized perfectly with a blue velvet clutch, cap-toed stilettos and plenty of sparkly jewelry. She kept her long hair down and slightly wavy, which is an easy go-to look for any gal!

Ladies looking to be comfortable (and warm) at formal events this season would do well to steal Jessica's long sleeves idea!

Six types of dresses that every gal should own

If you're looking for cheap formal dresses to bulk up your wardrobe, you should find styles that are always flattering and can be worn for more than one occasion. Instead of picking formal dresses that are only appropriate for a certain type of event, consider these six types of dresses that you can wear almost anywhere.

1. LBD. No woman's closet is complete without a little black dress. Redbook Magazine recommends choosing one in a material that "moves" and doesn't wrinkle.

2. Floral print. Glamour Magazine suggests a ladylike floral dress for times when you want to feel girly and fashionable.

3. Floor-length. They seem formal, but floor-length dresses in solid colors can be casual depending on how you accessorize them.

4. Cocktail. Redbook suggests a colorful cocktail dress with details that flatter your figure, whether it's a peplum shape, empire waist or wrap dress.

5. Club. A club dress should be as bold and sparkly as you dare to be. It should also hug your curves and make you feel sexy.

6. Sheath. A simple sheath dress is easy to wear. Accessorize with a blazer or sparkly cardigan and you've got yourself a go-to outfit.

Red hot dresses are in for the fall season

If you're looking to stand out at a homecoming dance or other seasonal event this fall (and who isn't?), you might want to consider red formal dresses. Warm colors like red, coral, orange and yellow are perfect for the autumn months, and they're likely to grab you plenty of attention. Need an example of how you should accessorize a red dress? Penelope Cruz has the answer!

InStyle Magazine reports that the actress showed up to the premiere of Twice Born at the San Sebastian International Film Festival wearing a gorgeous vintage Versace design. The strapless red dress had a pleated wrap detail that created a sexy slit up the front. She accessorized with a red and gold clutch and fabulous red satin platform sandals with ankle straps.

To keep all eyes on her dress, she skipped flashy jewelry, keeping it simple with a pair of stud earrings and a ring. She painted her toenails red to match the outfit and went low-key yet glamorous with her hair, parting it deep on the side and gathering it over one shoulder.

If you're looking for cheap formal dresses, a monochromatic red ensemble is the perfect pick for fall. You might even want to add red lipstick to go the extra mile!

Looking for the perfect fall dress color? Try yellow!

There are many events that take place during autumn that require formal dresses, and what better way to give a nod to the season of foliage than by matching your gown to the hues of those leaves? Yellow is one particularly pretty choice, and it was a popular color at the recent 2012 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California.

Three notable actresses walked the red carpet in golden gowns, including the baby-bump-carrying Claire Danes, redheaded Julianne Moore and petite Julie Bowen. All three pulled off the look perfectly, choosing fits and accessories that flattered their figures.

Claire chose a loose, flowing gown with no straps and an empire waist that highlighted her growing belly, accessorizing with gold sandals and gold bangles on her wrist. Julianne wore a long-sleeved dress with an A-line skirt, adding on a diamond-encrusted cuff. Her red hair and red lipstick popped against the yellow backdrop. Julie wowed in a bright, strapless mermaid-shaped gown with ruching on the skirt, dangling earrings and a gold box clutch.

When you're choosing between cheap formal dresses, consider a stand-out yellow design that's paired with gold accessories. You'll be the star of the event!

How to successfully accessorize a cocktail dress

The rules of accessorizing are often confusing. Some people will tell you that there's no such thing as making a mistake when it comes to styling yourself with baubles, handbags and footwear, while others swear there are certain combinations that you can never get away with. But there are a few tips that might help you decide on accessories that can play up your cocktail or formal dresses.

Glamour Magazine's fashion blog recommends choosing a simple dress if you're planning to show off a statement pair of earrings or a large, attention-grabbing necklace. Ideally, it should be a straightforward shape and a solid color. This keeps your outfit from looking too busy.

If you're wearing something like a homecoming dress that should be the focal point of your ensemble, it's best to keep your accessories to a minimum. A pair of stud or hoop earrings, a simple necklace and perhaps a ring or two are all you need for jewelry. If you choose drop earrings, it might be best to pair these with a bracelet rather than a necklace.

As for handbags, a clutch is always a chic choice that can complement special occasion dresses. And when it comes to shoes, anything goes!

Atlanta Prom Market - Prom 2013 Trends!

We've been back from prom market in Atlanta for a couple of weeks now, so it's time to give you some inside scoop on what we saw! Trends we saw throughout the show:
  • Navy - LOTS of dresses in this gorgeous dark blue they are calling Navy

  • Sheer Skirts - mermaid style dresses that hug the hips down the legs, then a skirt sheer enough to see the legs and shoes.
  • Studs - metal studs, some pointed (yikes!) and some rounded, all over the dresses in patterns.
  • Chiffon - beautiful, gorgeous and stunning colors in flowing chiffon with beaded accents
  • Variegated beading - beaded bodices and accents going from light to dark in colorful shades
  • Short sheaths with overskirts - fitted short skits in all types of fabric with overskirts attached at the waist

What to wear to a beach wedding

Summer is the season for beach weddings, which can come with an unwritten dress code. As a wedding guest, dresses can be hard to choose. Cocktail dresses may seem too formal, and while LBDs are a good choice for most special occasions, a summer wedding at the beach calls for a light, flowing summer dress.

Floral prints are the perfect choice for a beach wedding because they fit the fun mood. The level of formality depends on the type of fabric you pick, with cotton being the most casual and satin or shiny fabric among the most formal.

Keep your accessories casual but still polished. Finding appropriate shoes can be an issue for beach weddings, as you don't want to be sinking in the sand with high heels or too casual with a pair of flip-flops. The solution? Flat, strappy sandals are always a good choice, as are ballet flats. If you want some height, choose a wedge that won't sink into the sand as much. Who knows, you may end up kicking them off anyway!

Don't forget to bring something like a wrap or a pashmina in case it gets breezy. As for your hair, why not let it pick up some texture? After all, you're at the beach!

Taking your dress-size measurements

Sizes vary between dress manufacturers, so it's not always a given that if you're an 8 in one dress you'll be that size in another brand's dress. Knowing your measurements can help you figure out what size you'll be, as most brands have a measuring chart available to compare to online.

Follow our Measuring Instructions for the best fit.

You can use a cloth tape measure and a full-length mirror to measure yourself. Getting someone to help you may be beneficial, as you might not always be able to reach or read the measurements. You should wear dress undergarments or light clothes when you measure yourself to avoid added bulk. Be sure to stand up straight and keep the measuring tape snug but not too tight.

To find your bust measurement, measure around the fullest part of your bust. You may also want to measure around your shoulder blades and under your armpits depending on what style of dress you're looking to buy. Next, find your natural waistline and measure that. Finally, measure the fullest part of your hips.

Once you find your measurements, compare them with your dress brand's measuring charts and choose the size likely to fit you best. If it's not perfect, you can always get a good tailor.

Making bridesmaid dress shopping easier before your destination wedding

If you've made the decision to hold a destination wedding, this is a huge expense that you're expecting your bridal party, friends and family to take on. With this in mind, it may not be wise to ask your bridesmaids to shoulder the debt for upscale formal dresses, so it may be best to allow them to pick one of their own.

Bridesmaid gowns are a significant investment, and there's no point in forcing your loved ones to pay for a dress they're only going to wear once! However, you don't want your friends showing up and looking like a discordant mess, so lay down a few ground rules for them before they go shopping.

Start by picking a color that everyone can agree on. This will help to narrow down your bridesmaids' style choices significantly and allow you to settle on something everyone likes. You should also discuss styles and cuts to find the right balance of embellishments and other features so you'll all be looking your best on the big day.

Asking your bridal party to commit to an exotic locale is one thing, but forcing them to wear a dress they may not like is another. Giving them the freedom to choose their own ensemble will avoid disagreements and help limit the expense of your ceremony.

How to choose the perfect colors for your skin tone

An LBD may be your best fashion friend, but sometimes the same color can get a little boring. The next time you're shopping for a dress, whether it be a cocktail dress, party dress or evening gown, choose a color that complements your skin tone so you can really stand out.

When out shopping, you can determine your ideal color palette by placing your hand next to a desired dress color. The colors should work well together, not contrast. Or to determine whether you'd look better in a warm or cool tone, use the gold and silver test. Put something that's metallic gold near your face in front of a mirror, then do the same with something that's metallic silver. You'll be able to see if your skin has more of a bluish (cool) or yellowish (warm) tint and you can pick colors that complement it.

What do you think? Are these the correct colors on these models?

Once you find colors that suit you, you don't have to stop wearing colors that may clash with your complexion. Just keep those colors further from your face. If pink doesn't go with your skin tone but you love it anyway, wear a pink purse or some bright pink shoes with a dress in a color that matches your skin tone. You'll be sure to turn heads.

Finding summer dresses for weddings

Summer is coming which means wedding season is officially here. As your calendar fills up with weddings and events to attend, you may be hunting for the perfect formal dress.

This is an opportunity to take advantage of the season’s bright colors and floral prints. Keep style and comfort in mind while looking for dresses for a wedding. If it’s outdoors, remember to dress for the weather. To better handle the heat and humidity, stick to lighter fabrics and shorter lengths.

If you're trying to find outfits for several weddings this summer, money may be a concern. Costs add up quickly between gifts, travel and dresses. You can cut corners by pairing little black dresses with bright and fun accessories.

While dressing for daytime nuptials, have fun by sporting a bright handbag. Add chunky, beaded jewelry for a more casual look. In the daytime, you can get away with strappy sandals or ballet flats. For evening, keep it formal with heels and understated jewelry.

It might not be your big day, but that shouldn’t stop you from having fun with your style!
