How to dress appropriately for holiday season events

It's almost that time of the year again - holiday season! Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner, which means you'll probably have more than a few gatherings to attend. What are the rules on dressing appropriately for holiday get-togethers?

Before you pick out a formal dress, make sure you understand the kind of people you'll be rubbing elbows with. A short mini-dress might be great for a New Year's Eve at the club, but it probably won't fly at a family gathering or an office party. For these more conservative environments, pick a modest neckline and a floor-length hem and dress it up with plenty of feminine accessories.

It's also important to consider color when picking out a dress for a holiday soiree. Pastels are out - warm, rich tones are in. Jewel-toned hues like fuchsia, sapphire and emerald are perfect for a late-night get-together, and rich reds and golds can definitely bring a little heat on a cold evening.

Finally, don't forget about the shoes. You'll need to keep those toes warm, so opt for closed-toed pumps instead of strappy sandals that'll have you shivering.
