Consider a high-low dress for your next formal event

Fall fashion is already in full swing and for many young ladies, that means heading off to shop for homecoming dresses and cute cocktail dresses that can pair with the season's hottest trends. If you're looking to make a splash at your next formal event, a high-low dress could be the unique style that sets you apart from the rest.

A high-low dress is known for its long tail and short skirt front that gives you the best of both sides of the fashion spectrum. It is available in countless versions and cuts so you can choose the perfect mixture of elements to suit your own personal style.

If there is one accessory that should be at the top of your list when wearing one of these formal dresses, it's your footwear! The skirt front and long back of the dress creates a perfect backdrop to show off a pair of killer pumps, so use it to your advantage! Go for a complementary color or a matching shade to make a statement in a hurry. And of course, don't forget to find a few enchanting pieces of jewelry that can make or break your ensemble.

Rock a cut-out dress at the club

Summer's almost over, so by now you likely have a fabulously bronzed bod and want to show it off before it's time to start layering clothes for colder weather. Luckily club dresses are meant to be sexy and flattering, and one with a cut-out detail is sure to wow everyone around you.

Stars like Kate Bosworth have been rocking cut-out trends all summer, and it's easy to find dresses these days with flattering designs. Look for something that plays up your best features. If you love your bust, consider a deep V-neck or a peekaboo neckline. Love your tummy? Pick a garment that shows off a little skin around your midsection.

You could even be a bit more daring and call attention to the cut-out by wearing a colorful bra that peeks out from underneath or bright jewels. Body moisturizer with a touch of shimmer will help your skin sparkle and look glowing wherever it peeks out. To avoid strange tan lines, keep it as a night outfit or wear plenty of sunblock if you're out and about in a cut-out dress during the day.

White after Labor Day? It can be done!

Think you need to put away all of your white outfits as soon as Labor Day has passed? Not so. You can still pull off white well into the winter, especially at a formal event - it's just about finding the right cut!

White is usually considered a summer color, but what's more pristine and pure than the first white snow or an overcast fall day? You can channel the beauty of fall and winter into a white formal gown easily if you follow these tips.

Whenever you wear white, no matter the season, it's important to stay out of wedding dress territory. Avoid details that are traditionally bridal, like lace and embroidery, and stay away from floor-length hems. To stay warm in the colder months, opt for a white dress with long sleeves and a short hemline, then pair it with sheer tights and closed-toed heels to avoid getting chilly. Throw on a brightly-colored overcoat if you'll be stepping outside, and you can add an instant pop of attitude!

You can also dress up your white look with brightly colored earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Keep your look simple but sparkly white clear diamonds or ivory pearls, or add a little life with colorful emeralds, sapphires, rubies and amethysts.

A lace ensemble could be a chic choice for your fall formal event

There were many fashion trends on display at the recent Primetime Emmy Awards, but the ensemble that Minka Kelly wore nearly stole the show. The actress wore a dazzling navy blue lace formal dress that featured a number of chic embellishments and trends that fashionistas should keep in mind when sporting the look this fall.

What made Kelly's choice stand out was the addition of lace sleeves. Not only did this add a touch of texture and additional patterns to her look, but it's exactly the kind of thing ladies should look for this fall to feel a bit warmer when the temperature starts to dip.

When you're wearing one of your favorite navy blue evening dresses, a good rule of thumb is to coordinate colors with some blue jewelry. A deep blue necklace or pair of earrings can match beautifully with your ensemble and can really help to create a streamlined look.

Lace is a fabulous fabric that has enjoyed a rousing comeback in recent years, so when you're out shopping for homecoming dresses, this could be a chic choice to consider to add a touch of elegance to your ensemble.

Showcase a light blue dress this fall

Actress and all-around fashion magnate, Eva Mendes was one of the many celebrities in attendance for the recent private Ferragamo bash in New York City. Mendes showcased a scintillating mixture of accessories, footwear and a gorgeous baby blue formal dress.

Mendes' dress was a soft blue design that tied around her neck and fastened with a sparkling brooch around the neckline. The evening dress sat just above her knee and was a cool and composed look for the high-fashion occasion.

Mendes took her outfit to the next level with her choice of accessories. She combined a few funky bangle bracelets in varying designs on one arm and wore a pink cocktail ring to match a pair of stud earrings. To top it off, she wore a pair of black peep toe pumps which provided excellent contrast for the soft hues throughout the ensemble.

When you're out shopping for homecoming dresses or evening dresses this fall, a muted color could be a chic choice for any social occasion. It will give you more freedom with your accessories and blend perfectly with the nature of the season.

Choosing a dress to wear with your chic pair of boots

There's nothing quite like merging two completely different types of styles and seeing if they go together, and one way for you to instantly give your ensembles some attitude is by dusting off your favorite pair of boots and combining them with short dresses or your favorite rocker glam outfit.

When you're heading out for a night on the town, a short dress is a fabulous way to stay fashionable in any setting. Try coordinating colors with your dress by finding a cute pair of cowboy boots in a similar hue. You can then use some chic accessories to create a uniform look that's perfect for a dinner date with friends.

If you're more of a rocker glam girl, combining a pair of black boots with evening dresses or a glittering one-shoulder dress will attract all the right kinds of attention. Go for glitz and glamour with your look by using a few sparkling bangle bracelets and a colorful statement necklace to amp up the look of your wardrobe.

Boots can be a girl's best friend in any season, so experiment with your special occasion dresses and other pieces to find the ravishing combination that works for you.

Helen Mirren shows mothers of the bride how it's done

Helen Mirren attended a Manhattan screening of her movie, The Debt, wearing a chic look to copy if you're about to attend your son or daughter's wedding.

Mother of the bride and mother of the groom dresses are sometimes difficult to choose, but Helen's look is one that can't go wrong. Her long-sleeved red wrap dress was flattering with a shallow neckline and knee-length hem. Gathered details at the shoulder and waist added shape to the garment and provided an opportunity to use sparkling brooches for a touch of class.

She accessorized with a pair of silver sandals and sheer hose, which you may want to do without unless they're one of your wardrobe's staples. A French manicure made her nails look sophisticated and a smooth blowout with side-swept waves looked soft and chic. Bold eyeliner defined her eyes and a red lipstick perfectly complemented the crimson ensemble.

When looking for mother of the bride or groom dresses, choose a flattering shape in a color that goes well with your skin tone. Wrapped dresses are always a safe bet, and sparkly accessories will add a hint of glamor.

Neon done right

Immortals beauty Freida Pinto showed off her fun and stylish side while attending Comic-Con recently in a neon yellow mini dress.

The fashion forward starlet knew what she was doing in this number, which left all eyes on her. The dress was modest, with a high neckline and a flowy shape, but her sex appeal came through in the bold choice, which proved she definitely isn't afraid to take risks.

The black accents gave the look a bit more dimension and worked to outline the bright color choice. Paired with black strappy sandals, a modest black watch and light makeup, Freida showed she can look just as good in this comfortable design as she does in a gown for the Oscars.

A dress like this would be a surefire way to get you elected for homecoming queen at your school, as the fun design shows you're the girl who's the life of the party.

You can bring this look from summer to autumn with ease by pairing it with a fun, but easy-going up-do, a pair of black booties (after all it will be fall) and even black textured leggings.

Busy dresses don't need flashy accessories

Zoe Saldana is a fashion risk-taker, which explains her dramatic ensemble at a recent Colombiana screening.

Zoe's mini, long-sleeved dress bared some serious skin, with a plunging V-neck almost down to her belly-button and a hemline hitting at the tops of her thighs. A long draped detail was attached at the hip, but it only covered the rear, leaving the front open and her legs exposed. The fabric featured a busy pattern of gold and silver embroidered embellishments in all kinds of shapes and stripes. White shoulder details gave the look some structure.

Accessories are unnecessary when you have a very detailed dress, which is why Zoe went minimal with a pair of diamond stud earrings. Strappy black heels added a level or fierceness and matched her sultry manicure. She pulled her hair back into a low updo and went all-out with her makeup, using a cat-eye liner to define her eyes and a pink lipstick to gloss her pout.

If you're looking to spice up your next social occasion, a dress like Zoe's takes some guts. You can get a similar effect without having to bare tons of skin by choosing a piece with interesting details and pairing it with simple, understated accessories. If you do show a bit of skin, keep it to one area, like your chest or your legs to avoid looking too bare.

Turquoise is a hue that's flattering during any season

There are few colors that are as versatile as turquoise, so if you're planning on sporting a formal dress in the hue this fall or if you're already planning your spring wardrobe, investing in a few pieces sporting this amazingly versatile shade will instantly add depth and personality to your wardrobe.

Whether you're sporting a cute cocktail dress or short dresses in this fabulous shade, you should take a few things to heart. First and foremost, gold accessories are right at home with a turquoise ensemble. In fact, don't be afraid to pile on more than your fair share! A few gold bangle bracelets, a pair of teardrop earrings and a chunky cocktail ring can add some enchanting warmth to your outfit.

Cosmetics also play an important role in your outfit, so try sporting some equally vibrant shades of eyeshadow and lipstick to give your ensemble a bold edge. Whether you're shopping for homecoming dresses or evening dresses, don't discount how dazzling a turquoise look can be. It may just become your go-to shade for social occasions or a smart and functional style for the office.

Taking the plunge

When someone asks you to take the plunge, it almost sounds as though you should be afraid. We're talking about necklines in this case, however - a style that will have even the shyest of you brimming with confidence.

With so many silhouettes to choose from, homecoming dress shopping can be a bit overwhelming. It may not be immediately apparent which cut is right for you, but there are a couple questions you can ask yourself when considering those deep V's.

Do you yearn to wear a long, dangling necklace with your dress? More importantly, is drawing attention to your chest more appealing than letting your legs, hips or back steal the show?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may have found your match made in heaven. Even those of you who believe yourselves to be over or under-endowed in that region can shine in plunging necklines - ladies with smaller chests can pull off open necklines with more modesty and elegance than others, and for busty gals, a deep narrow slit can still offer the mystique you crave while giving you the coverage and support you need.

Kate Winslet sports a jaw-dropping ensemble at Venice Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival is an opulent event set against the backdrop of the gorgeous Italian city, and the venue seems to bring out the best in the fashions on the red carpet. Kate Winslet flaunted one of the show-stopping ensembles of the evening by wearing a contoured black and white outfit that sported a few intriguing visual tricks.

At first glance, Winslet's formal dress was white in the front and black in the back. However, the shape of the hues played an interesting optical illusion. With the black fabric flanking the white, the shape of the front of the dress made it look like she was wearing a much smaller outfit, which helped to accentuate her figure.

Winslet kept things simple by wearing an elegant silver cuff bracelet and pearl teardrop earrings which added a bit of sparkle. To top it off, she wore a pair of black peep-toe heels to complete her delightful mix of base neutrals.

A black and white ensemble is always a chic choice for formal events or when you're shopping for homecoming dresses this fall. Don't be afraid to sport some brightly colored accessories which can really stand out against your backdrop.

Step out of your comfort zone

Disney sweetheart Selena Gomez looked anything but sugary at the Nokia Theater for MTV's Video Music Awards.

Taking a breather from her signature cutesy styles, Selena opted for a fierce black minidress with a half skirt and detailed cutouts. The sleeveless dress featured a plunging neckline with a cuff around the neck. An intricate bodice with subtle side cutouts gave way to a flowing skirt, which reached the floor, but left the front of her legs bare.

She accessorized perfectly with a pair of pointy gold pumps, a gold cuff on her forearm and a matching clutch. She pulled her hair back into a sleek updo, which added to the outfit's edge and gave her an exotic look. Black eyeliner and tons of mascara defined her brown eyes, while a soft coral gloss highlighted her pout.

If you're looking to stand out at your next social occasion, rethink your usual fashion choices and opt for little black dresses that are bolder. People will be amazed by your transformation and it won't even call for a dramatic haircut or makeup swap - just an edgy new style!

Sofia Vergara does it again with a chic purple formal dress

Strapless dresses are normally reserved for formal occasions, but Sofia Vergara seems to have the ability to pull it off during any social setting. At the premiere of the The Smurfs in New York City, Vergara strolled the blue carpet in a ravishing full-length purple formal dress that she perked up with some fashionable choices in turquoise jewelry.

Vergara's summer dresses have been the stars of best-dressed lists and fashion blogs the entire season, but this purple number may have taken the cake. The form-fitting dress was embellished with glittering sequins in striped patterns that wrapped their way around the entirety of her ensemble.

Where Vergara made an excellent fashion statement was with her choice of jewelry. She opted for a bunch of purple bangle bracelets and a few turquoise pieces. This hue is a wonderful choice for the summer and it provides excellent contrast with darker special occasion dresses.

Vergara's style choices are just a few of the things that young ladies can consider when shopping for their homecoming dresses. No matter what color outfit you choose, bright and bold accessories will ensure that you're one of the most chic women at the dance.
