Tips for choosing the right bridesmaid dresses

Choosing bridesmaid dresses for your wedding can be a daunting task, but as long as you take the time to think about each of your bridesmaids, you should be able to select a dress that won't make them a fashion victim.

Yes, it's your big day. But that doesn't mean you should dress your bridesmaids in something you wouldn't be caught dead wearing. Don't choose anything unflattering that would make them look heavy or like they have no chest. Dresses with A-line skirts or empire waists tend to look good on everyone.

A cool, new trend is picking a color or fabric and letting your bridesmaids mix it up with a dress style of their choosing. That way, your tall, curvy friend doesn't have to feel awkward wearing the same dress as your petite friend.

The price range for bridesmaids dresses is generally around $100-$300. Since your friends are making such an investment, it would be nice if you picked something they could add to their wardrobe and wear again. Little black dresses and dark colored dresses are always in fashion. Lastly, have fun with it. Take some of your bridesmaids with you when you go dress shopping and find something everyone feels beautiful in.

Simple lacy flower girl dresses

Flower girl dresses should be cute and fun, just like the girl who's wearing them. If you're having trouble finding the perfect look, take a cue from Hailee Steinfeld, actress in True Grit, who wore a little white dress at the Day of Indulgence.

Hailee's white lace garment was simple, girly and adorable. The ribbon straps tied over the shoulders for a little flair, and the hem hit at mid-calf. The bodice consisted of horizontal pieces of lace, and the sheer skirt ended in a pretty flowery design at the bottom.

She wore white peep-toed platforms with cork bottoms for a summer wedding vibe and kept her makeup minimal with a little bit of eyeliner and matte powder. She wore her long hair down and straight for a fuss-free style. No jewels were necessary for this understated look.

Something similar would definitely work for a flower girl, no matter how old she is. A two-year-old or a 15-year old would look equally dolled up in a lacy white dress and white sandals. Just find a shape that is age appropriate, and she'll be ready to toss those flowers all day!

Diamonds lend any outfit sparkle

The Tiffany & Co. dinner was a star-studded event, but Emmy Rossum's classic look outshined the other attendees' fashions.

Emmy chose a sheer silvery-gray sleeveless dress with a shallow scooped and a short, flirty A-line skirt. The sheer top let the underlying strapless bodice peek through, while a solid hem balanced the look. A lighter strip of fabric encircled her waist, giving the perfect hourglass shape to her figure.

She accessorized with a dark metallic clutch, silver peep-toe heels and, of course, Tiffany & Co. jewels. To give the look an added touch of color, she chose a bright red lipstick, which worked the same way a manicure would to incorporate unexpected hues. A bit of brown eyeshadow and mascara was all she needed for a flawless-looking face.

When choosing cocktail dresses, look for a noticeable detail at the waist that will give you a shapely look if you have a straighter figure. A belt will highlight a curvier girl's waist, which is most often the slimmest area of the abdomen. Match your accessories for a classic look and wear plenty of diamonds - faux or not!

Now that the dog days of summer are here, it's time to get a few good uses out of your vibrant sundresses while there's still time. Recently, Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler wore a bright yellow formal dress to the VH1 Do Something Awards and showed that the season's hottest fashions will stay relevant for quite a while.

Poehler wore a chiffon cocktail dress that was an easygoing look for the red carpet and could be a great style for ladies that are back on campus or enjoying a fall day on the town. Poehler's dress was a wonderful mixture of textured elements with a gilded sash around her waist.

The comedienne opted for neutral elements in her ensemble by choosing a soft pink lip color and just a touch of eyeshadow. Poehler topped her ensemble off with a pair of fabulous nude pumps and chose all the right accessories to make her dress the focal point of the outfit.

A yellow ensemble is something to consider when you're out shopping for homecoming dresses. The leaves will be changing and you can still enjoy a fresh summer look next season.

A mix of crazy patterns spice up any outfit

Actress Mena Suvari, the new face of Captain Morgan spiced rum, attended a press conference wearing a crazy printed dress that definitely spiced up her look.

The dress, which she took from Matthew Williamson's Spring 2008 collection, featured a wide range of tribal prints, from black and white chevron stripes to purple and blue designs. The sleeveless dress had a fringed v-neck and shoulder details with a sash tied around the waist, creating an hourglass shape. A ruffled layered skirt added some serious volume on the bottom and highlighted her slim legs.

Mena paired the dress with a wild pair of gold platform peep-toes, dangling earrings and a large cocktail ring. She wore her blonde hair down with blunt bangs that looked edgy. A little eyeliner and mascara defined her eyes while a pink lip gloss amplified her pout.

Next time you're looking for statement cocktail dresses, you don't need to go totally tribal with tons of different prints, but you can take a cue from Mena and mix a couple of complementary patterns for a fun look. Keep your makeup and accessories minimal to avoid a busy ensemble.

One-shoulder elegance

The premiere of Our Idiot Brother had a lot of well-dressed starlets in attendance, but Olivia Munn looked the most polished and professional in a black and white one-shouldered cocktail dress.

The dress was simple yet elegant and fit perfectly with Olivia's style and shape. The white bodice wrapped around her chest, ending with a pretty ruffle over her shoulder. The strapless side showed off her bronzed shoulder and toned arm. The black skirt hit at the knee, following the shape of her hips and giving her a flattering hourglass silhouette.

She accessorized the ensemble perfectly with a pair of beige patent-leather peep-toed pumps, a red and beige box clutch, an orange-jeweled cocktail ring and dangling red earrings. These small pops of color balanced out the starkness of the dress. Simple makeup and straight, slicked-back hair completed the sophisticated outfit.

Next time you're looking for something stunning yet sexy among formal dresses, consider a one-shoulder dress with a simple shape and one eye-catching detail. Spice it up with jewelry that complements the dress and you'll look like a fashionista at your next social gathering.

Black lace sasses up any outfit

Actress Kerry Washington proved that one-shouldered cocktail dresses are sexy and fun at the Hollywood Palladium.

Kerry's formfitting black and pink dress hit at mid-thigh and featured a gathered shoulder detail. The bottom of the dress was a textured black fabric, set off by a belted detail at the waist which gave her an eye-catching hourglass shape. The bodice featured a satiny pink cheetah print covered with black lace, pulled over to the shoulder and knotted, creating chic dark diagonal folds over her chest.

She completed the look with black lace peep-toe booties, a black clutch and big hoop earrings. She pulled back her hair into a stylish messy updo and accentuated her eyes with lots of black eyeliner, smoky shadow and mascara. Bronzer highlighted her cheekbones and a light pink lipstick completed her look.

Next time you're in the market for club dresses or cocktail dresses, take a cue from Kerry and go with a one-shoulder piece to show off your arms. Lace will give any outfit a classic look, but black lace amps up the sexiness factor for a night that calls for extra glamor.

Long-sleeved minidresses rock anywhere you go

Zoe Saldana is no stranger to InStyle.com's coveted Look of the Day feature. She appeared on the website again thanks to a posh outfit she wore while shopping in Beverly Hills.

Minidresses are the perfect choice when shopping for casual, party or club dresses. They show off plenty of skin, yet look classic with long sleeves. Zoe's chic version featured navy and red horizontal stripes and three-quarter length sleeves. A shallow scooped neckline looked elegant, and a brown leather belt added shape.

She accessorized flawlessly with a crossbody brown leather bag and flat leather sandals to complement the belt. Bracelets on both wrists along with big hoop earrings looked trendy, especially with her aviator sunglasses. She kept her hair pulled back and painted her nails a unique navy shade to maintain the understated glamor.

Next time you're out on the town or at a fun social event, opt for a minidress with sleeves to balance out the minimal coverage on your lower half. Accessorize like a pro with matching materials and you'll demonstrate your mastery of the fashion world.

Stack the odds in your favor with a tiered dress

Layering and layering is oh so fun, but prom isn't always the best venue to don your favorite collection of sweaters, blazers and cardigans. Why not choose a dress that does the job for you with an ever-stylish tiered skirt?

These can run the gamut from a short, flouncy mini to a full-bodied Cinderella ball gown - whatever you had in mind, a tiered skirt can take your look from a basic minimalism to a refined level of complexity, creating body, movement and interest all at once.

Some gowns go so far as to offer a striped effect by alternating colors with the tiers. Some of you may not want to wind up looking like a candy-striper, which is understandable - but subtle variations in detail and texture is surely a winning way to create a totally unique look.

Tiered skirts are especially advised for those of you who know you'll be twirling and swirling all over the dance floor - this is one way to be sure that your skirts will do your killer moves some justice!

The brighter the better

Time to liven up with one of the hottest trends - mixing solid brights. What better way to show off a good mood than by expressing it with color? Emma Roberts proved this point recently when she showed up to the Beverly Hills screening of her new film The Art of Getting By in an emerald green mini and rich purple suede pumps.

The best part about this trend is that you are able to mix and match colors freely. Try to keep it to two bold colors, however, as adding more might make you start to resemble a rainbow - landing you on Fashion Police for sure. Emma's dress showed off her fabulous body by staying tight on top and loose and flowy through the skirt, keeping it playful and sexy. Plus, the mini showed off her mile-long legs, proving she's definitely all grown up.

With the bold colors, try to keep your accessories to a minimum - let the clothing do the talking. Emma keeps her look simple adding just a pair of gold hoop earrings to her statement outfit. With her honey-colored hair straight with side swept bangs, she makes this look a slam dunk for fashion.

Making waves with abstract prints

Just because the little black dress will always and forever be a cornerstone of a lady's night out doesn't mean it's a bad idea to change it up every once in awhile. Wearing a crazy print to a social event can be a fun and eye-catching variation on what some may consider the usual all-too-safe choice.

Mareva Galanter recently proved this point at Paris Fashion Week when she dressed up in a beige and black abstract minidress. The whimsical lines and swirls were beyond most recognizable traditions, but some may say it bore the wonderful weirdness of a Miro painting.

The short-sleeved dress featured an interesting silhouette in addition to the print - slightly poofy sleeves, a check-mark neckline and ruched siding all conspired together to create an avant-garde cut that was all too up-to-trend.

Ladies getting ready for a social event can borrow one (or all) of these unusual elements to make a memorable appearance, but remember - when wearing your dress out loud, keep the rest of your ensemble in the background.
