How to wear a leopard print mini with distinction this summer

There's nothing that's necessarily too casual about a leopard print mini, especially when you wear it with as much aplomb as Megan Fox did at the Maui Film Festival in Wailea, Hawaii.

Fox was a stunner as usual in a flouncy gray-scale leopard print mini which featured a crew-necked, short-sleeved silhouette and a gathered waist from which her short skirt hung loosely, almost in the fashion of a puckered shirtdress. Paired with a thin, elegant red beaded necklace and white pumps, Fox's ensemble was elegant enough for just about any occasion without being too overdone.

For a leopard print dress that's perfect for any formal occasion you've got lined up this summer, consider adding elegant shoes and accessories a la Megan Fox. Be mindful about the dress style you choose - short and tight may not always work when paired with an animal print design, but a loose, flowy maxi or contemporary silhouette will make this pattern really pop.

Liv looks good and she knows it

An adorable Liv Tyler played up the cameras while posing for pics in NYC recently. The long-legged beauty sparkled in a vintage inspired navy blue and red polka-dot dress with a matching belt to boot.

Liv proved girls definitely do want to have fun, and she showed it with the addition of her bright red back-strap heels and her over-sized sunglasses. Her hair was down in waves and even though she was just out walking around, she looked good enough to attend a premier or any other glamorous gala.

It's the effortless design that stands out, as she accentuated her natural good looks with nude lips and just a hint of blush on her cheeks. Her large black leather purse was a staple and worked with the look, as it proved she really is just like us - no need to switch out bags to match your outfit.
Liv is another star who will encourage you to run your errands in style. Throwing on a simple cotton dress may even be more comfortable than a pair of jeans, especially as the summer temperatures continue to rise. The shapely look of this mini is great for everyone as the v-neck give a peek at your promising tan and the matching belt adds a bit of flair and helps to cinch you in at the waist. Go wild with your shoes. You can tell Liv is loving life in this look!

A new way to wear pockets

Think you know everything there is to know about pockets? Think again.

You've seen them on the backs of jeans, the sides of cargo shorts and the fronts of t-shirts. Recently, we've even started seeing them on dresses. But have you ever seen a sideways center pocket? If you're interested in seeing what this unique fashion statement looks like, have a gander at the dress that Patty Hou wore when she arrived to announce the nominees of The 22nd Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan.

The Taiwanese star opted to wear a black and white Yves St. Laurent dress with a very noticeable detail - a single pocket sitting just above a slightly off-center slit. Of course, that wasn't the only source of the dress' glamor and intrigue: It also sported a unique neckline that showed off Patty's shoulders while still covering her d├ęcolletage. She paired it with some strappy sandals, bright red lipstick and a big, glittering cocktail ring.

While not as noticeable, many prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses and even some wedding dresses are now sporting hidden or subtle pockets. What a great idea!

Summer wedding dress trends

Summer is wedding season, which means plenty of you - maybe even some of you without a ring on your finger (yet!) - are looking for the ideal gown to wear as you walk down the aisle. Surely you've got a vague idea shrouded in the color white, but do you want strapless? Mermaid hem? Long sleeves?

Of course, plenty of this season's wedding gowns will be inspired by Kate Middleton's gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress. The long-sleeved number was a perfect marriage of tradition and modernity (a bit like Will and Kate themselves, don't you think?). Expect plenty of designs featuring vintage details, lace and more modest silhouettes this summer - perfect if you're looking for a design that'll stand the test of time.

Another popular trend this year? Textured fabrics. Princess Kate may have contributed to this one, but more likely it's just an overall preference toward gowns that have a little more visual intrigue than the typical silk or taffeta fashions. Little details, like flowers and lace overlays, are all the rage, so look for a dress that's not just a treat to look at, but also a treat to touch. (Of course, paws off for everyone but you and your husband!)

Biggest winner at the CMAs: one-shouldered dresses

From Sara Evans to Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, many of the biggest country crooners came out rocking one-shouldered dresses, though each unique gown represented each leading lady's individual style.

Kimberly out-staged the rest of her band in a playful silver-sequined mini showing off her fun and sexy side. The dress was form-fitting on top and moved away from her body through the thigh. She chose to pair this look with a brown leather clutch and strappy brown leather shoes - an interesting style combo that really only works at a venue like the Country Music Awards.

Sara kept things bright in her gown - she chose a short, form-fitting bright blue dress with one three-quarter length sleeve. She accessorized with long, dangling silver earrings, a few blinged-out bangles and a sequin-encrusted silver clutch. The only accessory that wasn't silver? Her shoes. Sara went with nude pumps to help elongate her legs in this mini, leaving the attention on her svelte figure.

These women proved they showed up to have a good time with their fashion, and the one-shouldered dress is a great way to implement this vibe. Showing off a shoulder can be sexier than it seems, as it creates an easy yet sophisticated feel without the need for added accessorizing. They all looked like they thoroughly enjoyed the attention from a room full of cowboys.

Be a sweetheart to your neckline

We've discussed to no end the many merits of a sweetheart neckline, but we had to make mention again when we saw Christina Hendricks in her lacy strapless LBD at Johnnie Walker's Father's Day gifting event in Manhattan.

The Mad Men darling really did a whole lot of justice to her famous assets thanks to the sweetheart neckline, which supported her bust as well as highlighted its shape. The lacy black knee-length number hugged her hourglass figure graciously, and the dark color looked ravishing against her pale ivory skin and trademark ginger locks. A pair of emerald chandelier earrings helped make her coloring pop.

Hendricks is inspiration to big-busted gals everywhere looking for a flattering way to show off their figures this summer - but interestingly enough, a sweetheart neckline is also perfect for small-chested ladies as well. The curvy shape helps create the illusion of curves where they're lacking - as well as flaunt those that are substantially in place!

A summer spin on the mermaid hem

Just because prom season's just about over doesn't mean that some of our favorite formal styles must be put away for another year. Mermaid hems were quite the commodity among this year's prom-goers - which only means that where there's a will, there's a way to adapt this silhouette to the wares of summertime.

We entreat you to take a good look at Camila Alves, who was the epitome of sultry summer goddess-ism at the Brazilian Film Festival in Hollywood. Camila's black floor-length number featured a demure mermaid hem, but we almost want to say that she found a way to channel an Ariel-turned-flamenco goddess (with a pair of clamshell castanets, of course). Thanks to the sultry black lace material and sleek wrap design, Camila looked appropriately summertime for being so dressed to the nines.

To make your favorite prom looks work for the summer season, do away with shiny taffeta and look for some sheer paneling, peek-a-boo lace and soft, breathable fabrics instead. Pair with a bright red pout for an extra shot of glamour.

Jennifer Hudson continues to flaunt her new body

During a recent performance on Good Morning America, Jennifer Hudson wowed the crowd with her shrinking figure and fabulous ensemble. Even though it was early in the morning, Jennifer was impressive in a sheer white and black top and a black high-waist mini.

Jennifer looked like a throwback to the 70s as her top was a sheer peasant look with sleeves that flowed through the wrists and see-through black material on her shoulders and around the neckline, adding a more modern feel. Her black mini was bold, with a four inch leather trim at the bottom, and gave her top the shape it needed with a high waist that showed off her petite frame. The skirt moved away from her hips, leaving her with an ideal silhouette.

Jennifer kept the look fun with her fire-engine red strappy heels. Her hair was sultry in a half-up style with soft curls. She looked hot in this outfit - and she knew it.

You can copy this sexy style at your next formal event with a dress that mimics the look of a skirt and blouse. Look for one with a billowing blouse and cinched waist that'll show off your curves and highlight the smallest part of your figure.

Reign in one-shouldered elegance

There's certainly never been anything wrong with looking extra regal on a warm, summer's night, and if ever there were a role model who could show us how to look positively statuesque and femininely soft all at the same time, we'd say it's Angelina Jolie.

Miss Jolie showed up to the Los Angeles premiere of Mr. Pitt's new movie, The Tree of Life, wearing an amazing honeysuckle chiffon floor-length one-shouldered dress. The asymmetrical silhouette left one sculpted shoulder bare and featured a half-length frilly sleeve on the other, falling loosely and elegantly around her frame, which she accented with a satin bow around her waist. She paired the look expertly with a pair of gold sandals and her trademark loose, cascading waves.
The dress Angelina rocked in this instance is the perfect embodiment of "wow," but if it's not totally up your ally, you can find a one-shouldered number that's more suited to your tastes. Look for hemlines of all heights and various colors and prints to ring in the summer with style.

Going Dotty

Gossip Girl goddess Blake Lively was recently interviewed by Glamour magazine, and if her accompanying photo shoot had a theme, we'd have to say it was polka dots! Sporting a number of retro-inspired outfits with lots of lace and sheer detailing, Lively rocked the dots like she was born for it. We loved seeing her in all of these flirty, summery outfits, and we hope you can take a little inspiration from the spread when it comes to finding a dress for your next formal event.

In one outfit, Lively wears a strapless shirt, surrounded by sheer tulle fabric dotted with wide, white circles. In the next picture, she adds yet another sheer layer of polka dots on top!

In another photo, Lively sports a pair of comfy-looking black shorts peppered with over-sized orange polka dots, along with a matching orange sweater and mahogany cuff.

Even when she's sporting a striped cardigan and some orange-sherbet colored shorts, we couldn't help but notice that Lively's three pastel bracelets were still sporting lots of little dots.

Take a page out of Serena van der Woodsen's book - er, magazine - and sport a few polka dots this summer!

Sing the blues this summer

Looking to make a splash this summer? Then electric blue could be your new favorite color. Inspired by the tones of the sea and the crystal-clear summer sky, this gorgeous hue is an effortless way to get into the spirit of the season. We especially love it on flirty mini-dresses, like the one that Kylie Minogue wore recently while launching her Aphrodite Les Folies Tour at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre earlier today in the Australian state of Queensland.

The singer sported an Emilio Pucci Spring 2011 gown in an electrifying shade of deep blue as she spoke to fans about her upcoming tour. With a short hem and long sleeves, the outfit was ideal for the transitional period where warm, balmy days can sometimes cool off in the evening. Additionally, the dress featured tons of little embellishments, including many beads, tassels and strings that appeared to be inspired by the unique accents of Indian fashion. And the dress had one more trick up its sleeve(s) - it was backless.

Electric blue is a beautiful color on ladies of all complexions and hair colors, so if you're feeling bold this summer, give it a shot!

Springtime, straight from the runway

Ever see a gorgeous dress on the runway and thought to yourself, "I could never pull that off in person"? Well, we're here to encourage you to try. Okay, we admit that a magazine cover isn't exactly "in person" at a summer soiree, but Zoe Saldana sported a gorgeous Elie Saab Couture 2011 gown on the cover of Hong Kong Prestige exactly as it appeared on the runway.

The actress, who has taken more than a few fashion risks in her day (remember that gorgeous purple Oscar dress with the mirrored bodice and ruffled hem?), looked relaxed and summery in the floral-inspired gown. It featured two twisted straps with a flowery shoulder detail on one side, a wrapped waist and a long, flowing skirt that reached all the way to the ground. Made up of a floaty organza fabric and featuring pink, brown, white and green, it simply doesn't get any more springtime than this incredibly romantic gown.

While you may not have the pocket change to nick a look right off the runway, we still think you should be encouraged by Zoe's bold fashion choice. It shows that you don't necessarily have to dress something down to make it real-world appropriate - sometimes all it takes is a little knowledge about wearing a fashion-forward design.
