How to Make a Short Dress Elegant

Short dresses are perfect for a variety of occasions, from formal get-togethers to date nights. An above-the-knee cocktail dress is fun, flirty and fabulous, but when wearing one of these frocks to an especially fancy event, it is important to be careful to aim for classy, not trashy.

A good party dress has a hemline that lands just a few inches short of the knee - any higher and you're veering into voyeur territory. If you find that you can't bend down comfortably without flashing your behind to the crowd, it's probably best to save that dress for a more appropriate setting - like the dance floor of a Las Vegas club.

When pairing a short dress with heels, stick to solid pumps and avoid towering shoes. Your short hemline is already showing off a lot of skin, so there's no need to go overboard.

Additionally, make sure to stick to heights you're comfortable in. It's better to be confident and comfortable in shorter shoes than teetering around on stilts.

It is also important to complement a flirty frock with demure make-up. Avoid too-heavy eyeliner and hot red lips. Instead, opt for a soft pink pucker, subtle eyes and peachy cheeks to soften up even the sultriest outfits.
