How to essentially wear the red carpet (and look great doing it)

We've seen plenty of amazing (and not so impressive) outfits come and go on the red carpet, but have you ever wondered what it would look like to actually embody the walkway itself? It's not as weird as it sounds - just check out Sandra Bullock's number at Sunday's Academy Awards for a start.

Bullock looked stunning in a scarlet strapless gown with a geometric sweetheart neckline and cinched waist, which hugged her hips and tapered down to the floor, ending in a side-swept flourish. The result was a glamorous statuesque repose that made her look perfectly ready to pose on top of one of her own prestigious trophies.

Ladies going for a bit of the Old Hollywood vibe for prom this year now have Bullock as a role model, and that's a wonderful thing. Whether you borrow her choice of classic red, the stunning asymmetrical cut she wore or her perfectly coiffed updo, you can take a bit of the red carpet to your own big event this year.

Of course, nothing goes better with a vintage look than some retro eye makeup and bright red lipstick. Pair your dress with some expertly winged black liquid eyeliner for a glamorous effect.
