Mariska Hargitay based her Emmy gown on her wedding

"When selecting a gown, women often gain inspiration from a variety of places - fashion magazines, their friends, even their favorite celebrities. However, it seems that Mariska Hargitay, co-star of Law and Order: SVU, got the idea for her 2010 Emmy dress from her own closet.

"[This gown] was inspired by my wedding dress," Hargitay told InStyle magazine. "I wore a very, very similar color...I wanted a dress that was very '50s, retro and romantic."

At the prestigious awards show, the brunette beauty, who is better known to fans as Detective Olivia Benson, wore a strapless blush formal dress with a silk tulle bodice, a mermaid silhouette and a simple train.

As to why Hargitay chose to use her wedding dress as inspiration, it may have just been a matter of perfect timing. "It was my wedding anniversary yesterday and I was feeling nostalgic," she added.

If you are selecting a gown for a special occasion, you may want to follow Hargitay's lead and pick a style similar to a silhouette you wore before and loved. You will already have an idea as to how the item will fit, and you can rest assured that you will feel comfortable in the familiar formal dress."
