Ask TJFormal: Dresses for shorter girls

Q: What kind of dress should I wear if I am short?

There are lots of options for girls who are petite. The most important thing is to get a dress that fits your body type and then alter it to your height. This might entail taking up straps or hemming if it is too long.

Short dresses work beautifully, especially if you choose a dress that is several inches above the knee. On a girl a few inches shorter, the dress would still be above the knew, just a little longer. Here are a couple that would be perfect:

Mori Lee Short Dress 9041

Faviana 2010 Prom Dress 6029

Long dresses with simple skirts would also work, as long as the dress is hemmed to the appropriate length. If you don't hem it, not only will it ruin the dress by being dragged on the ground, but it then makes the whole dress appear as if it doesn't fit you correctly. We have many, many great dresses that are easy to hem.

Blush 2010 Prom Dress 9070 - it would be easy for a professional seamstress to cut a few inches off the bottom of this dress and it would not ruin the overall style.

Paris 2010 Prom Dress 110714 - this is a full circle skirt, but it can still be hemmed since it is straight on the bottom.

Another idea is to go with a high-low hem with train. With this option, you can have the front be pretty much any length - from right below the knee to almost the ankle, and since it ends in a train, it is supposed to be on the floor. And a bonus is that you can show off your great shoes!

Wow! 2010 Prom Dress 1003 - on a shorter girl the front of this dress would merely come a little closer to the ankle - perfectly acceptable for a high-low hem.

Tony Bowls Evenings 2010 Prom Dress TBE11069 - this one has a very short front and would show off your great legs!

And of course we can't forget a great pair of heels to give you some height! Platforms are all the rage now and are perfect for shorter girls.

Alisha Hill Demi Shoe - has a 6 inch heel!! Better take some time to practice wearing and walking in these!

Coloriffics Shoe "Carnival" 843 - this shoe has a 4 1/2 inch heel and what a statement they would make!

So don't think you are doomed if you are a bit on the short side. If you need help deciding which dress works for you, don't hesitate to contact us!

Rachelle Rose - Exclusive Designer to TJ Formal

Rachelle Rose is an exclusive designer for TJFormal!  She is a graduate of New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. In her years there, she participated in their end-of-the-year fashion shows. She studied in Florence, Italy 2004-2005 where she traveled to Paris for PREMIÈRE VISION - the biggest fabric/fashion market in the world, to Milan for Milan Fashion Week, and toured The Gucci factory in Florence. During her last year at FIT, Rachelle interned at What Comes Around Goes Around.

We recently caught up with Rachelle Rose at her design studio in Charleston, South Carolina.

When did you decide to become a fashion designer? When I was a sophomore in high school. I went to market with my mom and was able to see how everything works, and then talk to some designers. Rebecca from Scala inspired me to go to FIT. I worked with her when I was 15 years old, modeling at market. I remember going to Express at the mall and really wanted a lot of the clothes there, but it was expensive for me. Also, that was one of the only fashionable stores in our area. I thought, I'd really love to design clothes and make them available and affordable for people like me. Not that we were poor, but spending $40 on a shirt for a 15 year old is silly. Things have changed and there are stores like that now. I remember when I applied to FIT and people started getting excited, saying “oooh you're going to be famous! “ The thought never even crossed my mind, and I could still care less! I just want to make cool clothes for cool people.

What makes your designs different? I try to explore different design details. RR3 has a cool back that I love. I'd love to explore with more styles so that's why I always encourage prom girls to be adventurous. It would make all the designers very happy.

What would you say is "new" or "hot" now or how would you define this year's look? I think the dresses are getting very sophisticated. Low backs are very popular as well as prints which I LOVE! I wish they had them when i was in school. Flowing skirts are so beautiful and fun. I love the interesting draping details like Sherri Hill's 2223 also.

Is there a certain era you find inspiring? I love the 70's because I'm drawn to the prints as well as the music and the spirit of that generation. But I love the 20s and the 50's too.

What's fun about making prom dresses? It's really fun to play with color; people tend to go for natural colors as they get older which gets boring. The beading and jewels are also fun to play with. Prom is a completely different vibe than any other type of fashion. You can be girly, sexy or sophisticated, etc...

What inspires you when you design? I get a lot of inspiration from traveling, other types of art, photos, architecture, nature, fabrics, beading; whatever I can get my hands on. Being around creative people is a huge part of my "success." I have a lot of talented friends and family. They motivate and inspire me.

What did you wear to your prom? I wore a fully beaded gown with a super low back and small train my sophomore year. My junior year I wore a two piece purple dress (when school still allowed it ) My senior year I work a more classic looking gown in crimson, with a sweetheart halter with sheer, beaded inserts where side slits would be and a long train. Of course I had the best dresses from TJFormal!

What is your advice for choosing a prom dress? Be adventurous and daring! You won't dress up many other times in your life so don't play it safe. Stop saying you look fat and have big hips, because you don't!!!! You will also never have the same body as you did in high school so take full advantage. I did, thanks to my cool mom!

What is the first thing you designed? At FIT- A corset with a shrug and a high-low printed skirt. We just learned to drape on the form and the school gave us fabric - it was hideous! But mine wasn't as bad as some of them!

Do you design/make other things besides dresses? Dresses are my favorite thing to make, but I explore all kinds of fashion. My passion is reconstruction from old garments. It's original and special. I make a lot of accessories, belts, hair pieces, some jewelry. I've made a few handbags and crochet from time to time. I'm learning to knit right now which is a lot of fun.

You can only find Rachelle’s designs here at TJFormal. She recently released 2 new dresses that are selling fast! If you want to definitely have a dress that no other girl will have, check out Rachelle Rose Designs! (Then go register your dress at the National Prom Dress Registry to be sure.)

Wearing White Dresses to Prom

Q: Is it OK to wear a white dress to prom? Or will it look too much like a wedding dress?

We get this question quite frequently. Girls are worried about wearing a white dress to prom, thinking it might look too wedding-ish. But some of our best-selling dresses in the past have been white dresses!

Some of the reasons to choose white...
  • White looks great with a lot of skin-tones and hair colors.
  • Accessories are very easy to match with white. Black, red, pink, just about any color will look great with white. Even printed or multi-colored accessories would be perfect!
  • Your boyfriend can easily wear a black tux and white shirt to complement your white dress.
  • Gold, silver, or rhinestone for jewelry all work very easily with white.
Here's a few prom dresses that are beautiful in white...
Dave and Johnny Homecoming Dress 4774 - very affordable!

Jovani 2010 Prom Dress 152402 - funky zipper accents!

Blush 2010 Prom Dress 9045 - simple and elegant...

Night Moves 2010 Prom Dress 6031 - sparkly waistline...

Faviana 2010 Prom Dress 6216 - inspired by a dress worn by Emily Osment.

So choosing white is perfectly acceptable! The most important thing is selecting a dress that looks great on you and makes you feel like a million bucks!

Photos of Prom Dresses on TJ Formal...

Q: Can I see photos of this prom dress in the other colors, or the back of it?

If we could, we would show every angle of every dress, in every color the dress comes in! Design houses take the photos with all their beautiful models and choose the colors in which the dresses are shown, then send the photos to us. We put up every single photo we can get from them, plus occasionally we take our own if we have the dress in stock in the store.

Sometimes we get lucky and get photos of every angle and even close-ups, like the Tony Bowls Shorts photos.

Or Blush which shows front and back...
Blush 2010 Prom Dress 9033

Other times we'll get photos of each color of the dress, or at least a few of the colors. Mori Lee often pictures multiple models in the different colors of the dress.

And Jovani shows some of their dresses in several colors...
Jovani 2010 Prom Dress 14365

But many times, we get one photo, in one color, of the dress. We know it's very difficult to imagine what the dress looks like in a different color. If asked, we will try to at least find the color shown in a different style from that designer, just so you can see what the color looks like.

So, we promise...we aren't hoarding or hiding photos from you - we want you to have as much information as possible when you make your choice for that perfect prom dress!

Amanda Bynes takes on the sexy bandage dress!

A great new look for Prom 2010 is shown by Amanda Bynes. Overlapped banding creates a form-fitting pleated look which is a hot trend for prom dresses this year! Sherri Hill rocks this style!
